RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
